Canadian government gives cash advances to flood victims

In Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada, flood victims are already seeing cash advances from the government to help with cleanup. This loan cash is being funded mostly by the PDAP – Provincial Disaster Assistance Program. Residents are already cleaning up, although cost of repair is not yet in.

When Saskatchewan flooded in 2010, it shut down big parts of the Trans-Canada highway. . Just crop damage will probably be around $ 300 million. That much money, or a lot more, could be the cost of the property damage.

PDAP pays out overnight loan to residents

Organizers are forgoing the requirement that insurance adjusters could have to make their estimate before the PDAP pays out the money. There are two separate types of money being provided to residents. The PDAP is offering a $ 3,000 cash til payday on expected insurance payments. These payments are supposed to fill the gap between insurance payouts and the disaster. Second, the PDAP provides up to $ 160,000 to help residents with “uninsurable losses.” All claims could be paid by Sunday, according to provincial officials.

Crop insurance sparks debate

In Maple Creek and surrounding areas, discussions about crop insurance are bringing up controversy. Farmers who bought insurance are worried that this will be an effective subsidy that will cause fewer individuals to purchase insurance next year.
