Canadian government gives cash advances to flood victims

In Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada, flood victims are already seeing cash advances from the government to help with cleanup. This loan cash is being funded mostly by the PDAP – Provincial Disaster Assistance Program. Residents are already cleaning up, although cost of repair is not yet in.

The flooding in Maple Creek

When Saskatchewan flooded in 2010, it shut down big parts of the Trans-Canada highway. . Just crop damage will probably be around $ 300 million. That much money, or more, can be the cost of the property damage.

The PDAP offers overnight loans to residents

Organizers are forgoing the requirement that insurance adjusters will have to make their estimate before the PDAP pays out the money. There are two separate types of money being provided to residents. First, the PDAP provides up to $ 3,000 as cash advances on expected insurance payments. These payments are intended to fill the gap between insurance payouts and the disaster. The PDAP will even budget $ 160,000 to cover resident’s “uninsurable losses.” The province has said that it hopes all claims are paid no later than this Sunday.

Debate over crop insurance

In some areas of Canada, the crop insurance has created a difficult debate. Even though only 70 percent of farmers purchased crop insurance this year, the government is going to be paying out benefits to almost all farmers. Some farmers who purchased insurance are concerned that this policy will end up costing them money. Meanwhile, government insurance adjusters are nevertheless in the area, determining the true extent of the flooding damage.Once that final determination is made, the government will start helping insurance companies pay out their benefits.
