Carte Goodwin, an aide to West Virginia governor Joe Manchin, was appointed by Manchin to fill the seat left vacant by the June 28 death of Democratic Senator Robert Byrd. Unemployed Americans have been waiting patiently for Goodwin to take the seat and change their lives. Every person expects that Goodwin will give the final vote to pass the jobs bill making unemployment benefits go longer.
With Carte Goodwin, the youngest replaces the oldest
At 92, Byrd died as the oldest senator ever to be in office and is now changed by Carte Goodwin, who is the youngest senator at age 36. His first vote will be critical, according to CBS News, to senate. The Senate will vote on extending unemployment benefits Tuesday morning after Goodwin is sworn in.
Republicans argue against unemployment extension
The seat left vacant by Byrd has left Senate democrats without the 60 votes they need for the unemployment extension. Unemployed workers would get 73 more weeks of unemployment if it passes. Republicans have argued the unemployment extension just adds to the national deficit. Democrats think that the spending caused by extra unemployment benefits would stimulate the economy. 70 percent of adults are not that concerned about the deficit considering they’re worried about their own employment, according to a Bloomberg poll shown on all247news.com.
Senator- Joe Manchin or Carte Goodwin?
Until the November general election, Carte Goodwin is going to keep the seat in senate. West Virginia’s senate delegation was already looking towards Goodwin, the Huffington Post reports. Senator Jay Rockefeller has Goodwin’s wife, Rochelle, as a director. Rockefeller said that Goodwin was “unquestionably among West Virginia’s best and brightest” in a statement made on Friday. Goodwin is not expected to run in November. Joe Manchin, his former boss, has already placed his dibs on the seat.
