Drew Brees Will Grace The Cover Of Madden 2011

The upcoming Madden 2011 edition of Madden NFL Football will feature Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints on the cover. The cover for this year was the first to be determined by votes, so one wonders who is responsible. The Madden NFL cover is a fantastic and terrible thing. . However, it also carries with it the Madden Curse. Some hefty payday cash would come from sales.

Drew Brees for Madden 2011 is the first picked by fans

The pick for the cover of Madden 2011 was the first time ever that fans got to vote, and they picked Saints quarterback Drew Brees. He was the Super Bowl MVP. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Indianapolis running back Reggie Wayne were close contenders. That begs the question if the voting was interfered with by Colts fans maybe?

Madden Curse

There is the Madden Curse to contend with. Supposedly (and correlation doesn’t prove causality) when an athlete gets on the cover of Madden Football, they get injured. Shaun Alexander graced the cover, and was injured. The 2008 season saw Vince Young on the cover, during which he was injured and didn’t start the rest of the season. Brett Favre tore his bicep after his cover in 2009. Madden 2010 had Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu on the cover, and both had drastically shortened seasons as a result of injuries. Did bitter Colts fans pay off EA with short term loans to curse Brees over the Super Bowl?

Drew Brees thinks it’s the bees knees

Drew Brees recently talked with BusinessWeek about his cover of the game. Drew Brees, with tongue planted in cheek, asked if everyone in New Orleans that practices voodoo could curse the curse. “If they’re Saints fans, then maybe they’ll put a copy in the freezer or something.” It is one of the bestselling series of video games. The first came out in 1989, and EA, or Electric Arts, has been making it ever since. Madden 2011 will be the 24th installment of the video game. From a Q and A with USA Today, Drew Brees is certainly proud, but doesn’t want anyone reminding Jared Allen before the next Vikings Saints game.
