The upcoming Madden 2011 edition of Madden NFL Football will feature Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints on the cover. The cover for this year was the first to be determined by votes, so one wonders who is responsible. The Madden NFL cover is a fantastic and terrible thing. . That said, there is the Madden Curse to contend with. Some hefty payday cash would come from sales.
Drew Brees Madden 2011 cover first fan pick
The Madden 2011 cover was the first done by fan vote, and they picked Drew Brees. He did get Super Bowl MVP. Close finishers were Reggie Wayne from the Indianapolis Colts and Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings. However, this makes one wonder – was the vote bombed by Indianapolis Colts fans?
The Madden Curse
There’s a phenomenon known as the Madden Curse. Though correlation doesn’t prove causality, if an athlete gets on the cover of Madden Football, they supposedly will get hurt. Shaun Alexander suffered injuries after his cover appearance and his career declined. The 2008 season saw Vince Young on the cover, during which he was injured and didn’t start the rest of the season. Brett Favre tore his bicep after his cover in 2009. Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu were on Madden 2010 and both had seasons curtailed by injury. Is it possible Colts fans used short term loans to bribe EA to get Brees on the cover to curse him to injury in retribution for the Super Bowl loss they suffered at his hands?
Drew Brees thinks it’s the bees knees
Drew Brees spoke with BusinessWeek concerning his cover appearance. Drew Brees, with tongue planted in cheek, asked if anyone in New Orleans that practices voodoo could curse the curse. “If they’re Saints fans, then maybe they’ll put a copy in the freezer or something.” It’s one of the most prestigious and bestselling video games of all time. EA, or rather Electric Arts, has been making it given that 1989. With the release of Madden 2011, the series will be releasing its 24th one. From a Q and A with USA Today, Drew Brees is certainly proud, but doesn’t want anybody reminding Jared Allen before the next Vikings Saints game.
